A gram of gold can be used to benchmark currencies. The following chart provides examples of how much of a local currency it takes to buy one gram of gold.

The development of the BRICS economic block is a key new development. Those currencies with an asterisk are current members of this economic union. It could be that a primary driver for the BRICS to form an economic alliance is to improve the value of their currencies. I find it very helpful to see the relative purchasing power of each country.

Would it be easier to measure transactions in gold instead of different currencies?
